2025-WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY -Stakeholders demand results in Adamawa
Reproductive health is not against childbirth in any way, it is rather vigorously campaigning that in Nigeria, women need not die, because of pregnancies or childbirth.
This message dominated proceedings at the 2025 World Contraception day, organized by the Adamawa State Government, through the Health Ministry and its partners.
Chief correspondent Ephraim Okpanachi, reports that relevant reproductive Health Stakeholders and Bachurre Community women, converged on Bachurre in Jimeta-Yola, to mark the day.
Nigeria accounts for about 20% of all women that die from pregnancy related causes in the world, a scenario many stakeholders do not want to continue.
Aisha Garba Abubakar, Adamawa State Family Planning Coordinator, stresses that health workers are not against women bearing children, however, a woman should rest and recover fully after each delivery.
“Family planning is not about stopping women from giving birth, even if you are going to have more than 10 deliveries, let there be spacing”
Michael Adejumo, Senior Social Behavioural Change Officer MSI Nigeria, emphasizes that the message of women’s health needs, is what MSI is harping on.
“Every day, the number of women that are dying is still alarming and If we do nothing about it our women will still be dying needlessly”
Evelyn John, the Adamawa State Clinical Training Officer MSI Nigeria, maintains that the health of the mother, is key in the wellbeing of the child, hence the need for proper attention for the mother.
“So if 60 women per- day are dying, as a result of pregnancy related problem, then it is an issue that we need to come into”.
Bachurre Village head Yauba Saad, represented by the Bachurre Ward head, Adamu Musa, urges men to support the cause of child spacing for the good of their families.
“We are happy this message has come to Bachure, it is such that we men need to do more, to ensure that our women get the required care and attention, sometimes we give birth to so many children and rather than women leaving out of despar, men are now abandoning their families due to difficulties”.
For Pwanagoshi Taboyi Dong, the Adamawa State Program Advisor, society for family health, every Nigerian should be genuinely concerned about the alarming maternal mortality rate in the country.
“Family planning, has also self-care options, where you can actually do family planning for yourself. Family planning does not stop you from having kids, it actually gives you time to recuperate, not just your health but also financially”.
Gloria Samaila, is a beneficiary she says they were taught how to space their children.
“They told us to do child spacing”
