Members of the Nigeria Law School class of 1980, have called for new strategies within the Nigerian legal system, to ensure the sustenance of Justice Delivery, Service and endearing Legacies.
The class, led by the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation: SGF Boss Mustapha, made this position known during a press briefing at the Nigeria Bar Association Secretariat in Abuja, as part of activities to mark the 45th anniversary of their call to bar.
Chief Correspondent Ephraim Okpanachi, who attended the briefing, reports that the class, called for urgent actions to tackle current issues facing the Nigeria legal system.
On the choice of their theme which says Nigeria’s legal profession at crossroads, the former SGF- Barrister Boss Mustapha, emphasized that a lot had happened in the Nigerian Legal System and the 1980 class is determined to bequeath legacies of justice and service.
“The reunion, is not only a celebration of shared memories, but also a reaffirmation of the class of 1980’s commitment to justice, service and legacy
As our chairperson Chinelo C. Okpala esq noted I quote we are alumni who don’t just celebrate ourselves but uplift others, alumni determined to leave a legacy worthy of the next forty-five years”
Responding to questions, on legacies which the class of 1980 is particular about and the current interplay of Artificial Intelligence, a member of the Class and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Offiom Offiom, stressed that AI has its place, while the human factor is key.
“They’ve been cases of recent in which a lawyer relied on artificial intelligence in framing arguments before the court, generated what they believed to be precedents; decisions which had been made in previous instances by superior courts, laying down principles which ought to be applied. The only problem was that those decisions were generated with the aid of artificial intelligence, those decisions were never in existence, so that’s part of the pitfall”.
The activities which commenced Thursday, culminate in the lecture on the state of the Legal profession in Nigeria on Saturday 29th November 2025.
