Soaring Fertilizer costs inimical to food production – Boromji farmers Yola Lament
Nigeria’s food price crisis is far from over, as farmers have continued to lament the rise in fertilizer for the 2025 raid fed farming season.
The situation is no different with farmers at Boromji community in Jimeta, Yola.
As of June 2025, the price of a bag of fertilizer was fifty-thousand naira, but just one month later in July, this has now risen to seventy-two thousand naira, representing an increase of 44 % percent.

Noami Nuja, is a farmer, she complains about the increase in price of fertilizer, a crucial ingredient for high harvest.
While fertilizer prices, were soaring, the price of farm produce was not rising commensurately, thereby forcing farmers into great losses.
“We are really struggling because fertilizer is getting expensive, it is also someone’s business to sell and buy farm input like fertilizers and herbicides and because things are expensive there is no way to get your money back and you end up at a loss”.
Another farmer, Musa Horo, says apart from the inconsistent rainfall, the increase in the price of fertilizer, which has now risen from fifty thousand naira, to over seventy thousand in just a month, is the major setback for farmers.
“Fertilizer is really expensive, we used to buy fertilizers at thirty thousand, but now it’s forty thousand, fifty thousand naira. The hike in fertilizer is really affecting us. The government should please subsidize the price of fertilizers so that we would be able to afford it”.
Umar Babbanyaya, is even more concerned about the fall in the prices of farm produce, at a time when traditionally, farm produce are pretty expensive.
He says the fall in price of grains and other farm produce, amid escalating cost of fertilizer and herbicides, is indeed worrisome for farmers.
“This current farming season is not going as expected, as the rainfall has not been consistent and fertilizer is really expensive and herbicide is also expensive, we are calling on the government to please help us in the reduction of the prices of the fertilizer and herbicide”.
The farmers have expressed displeasure at the situation, and call for a reduction in price of fertilizer, with an appeal to government to intervene by subsidizing the price of fertilizer, so that farmers can scale up food production.
